Learning a Trade Online

Emmetsburg IA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Emmetsburg IA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Points to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Emmetsburg IA trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Emmetsburg IA area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Emmetsburg IA area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Emmetsburg IA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Emmetsburg IA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Emmetsburg IA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Emmetsburg IA contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Iowa and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Emmetsburg IA, confirm that the schools you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
