Online Vocational Schools

Patricksburg IN student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Patricksburg IN students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Patricksburg IN trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Patricksburg IN area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Patricksburg IN area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Patricksburg IN is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Patricksburg IN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Patricksburg IN area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Patricksburg IN contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Indiana and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Patricksburg IN, check that the programs you are reviewing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
