But with so many trade schools to choose from, just how do you approach identifying the ideal one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will get the extensive training necessary to succeed in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Many prospective students make the error of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is closest to their home or where the work. Others might be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Naturally the cost and location of the training are critical factors when analyzing trade school options, but they must not be the only ones. Added considerations such as reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Maybe you have already selected one that you have for years desired to pursue. For example, maybe you have always had fun working on your car and have given thought to using that ability to make a living as an automotive tech. Or maybe a relative has had a prosperous career in a certain vocation or trade and you would love to follow in his or her footsteps. Online Trade Schools

Versailles IL student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Versailles IL students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Versailles IL trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Versailles IL area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Versailles IL area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Versailles IL is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Versailles IL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Versailles IL area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Versailles IL company if they can give you some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Illinois and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Versailles IL, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
