Learning a Trade Online

Harwood Heights IL student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Harwood Heights IL students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, for example learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Harwood Heights IL trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Harwood Heights IL area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Harwood Heights IL area vocational schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Harwood Heights IL is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates secure apprenticeships or employment in the Harwood Heights IL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many trade programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have referring partnerships with Harwood Heights IL area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Harwood Heights IL company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Illinois and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Harwood Heights IL, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
