Online Trade Schools

Bethalto IL student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Bethalto IL students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to learn a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Bethalto IL trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Bethalto IL area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Bethalto IL area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Bethalto IL is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Bethalto IL area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Bethalto IL area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Bethalto IL contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Illinois and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Bethalto IL, verify that the programs you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
