Online Vocational Schools

Kualapuu HI student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Kualapuu HI students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Kualapuu HI trade schoolsOnce you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Kualapuu HI area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Kualapuu HI area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Kualapuu HI is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Kualapuu HI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Kualapuu HI area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Kualapuu HI company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Hawaii and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Kualapuu HI, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
