Online Vocational Schools

Zebulon GA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Zebulon GA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Zebulon GA area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Zebulon GA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Zebulon GA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Zebulon GA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Zebulon GA contracting company if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Georgia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Zebulon GA, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
