Learning a Trade Online

Montezuma GA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Montezuma GA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Montezuma GA trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Montezuma GA area and across the Country to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Montezuma GA area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Montezuma GA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could indicate that students were unhappy with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Montezuma GA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Montezuma GA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Montezuma GA contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk with several of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Georgia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Montezuma GA, check that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
