Learning a Trade Online

Martinez GA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Martinez GA students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Martinez GA trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Martinez GA area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Martinez GA area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Martinez GA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate could signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Martinez GA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Martinez GA area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Martinez GA company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Georgia and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Martinez GA, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
