Learning a Vocation Online

Chatsworth GA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Chatsworth GA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Chatsworth GA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Chatsworth GA area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Chatsworth GA area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping guarantee that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Chatsworth GA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Chatsworth GA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Chatsworth GA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Chatsworth GA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Georgia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Chatsworth GA, check that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.
