Online Vocational Schools

Hawleyville CT student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Hawleyville CT students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for example learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Hawleyville CT trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Hawleyville CT area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Hawleyville CT area trade schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Hawleyville CT is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Hawleyville CT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Hawleyville CT area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Hawleyville CT company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Connecticut and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Hawleyville CT, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
