Learning a Vocation Online

Silt CO student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Silt CO students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online learning, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Silt CO trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you wish to earn, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Silt CO area and throughout the USA to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two factors you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Silt CO area technical schools have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it can help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Silt CO is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Silt CO area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Silt CO area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Silt CO contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with a few of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Colorado and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Silt CO, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
