Learning a Trade Online

Jamestown CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Jamestown CA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Jamestown CA trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many technical schools in the  Jamestown CA area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Jamestown CA area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it may help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Jamestown CA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It could also signify that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Jamestown CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring partnerships with Jamestown CA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Jamestown CA contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Jamestown CA, confirm that the programs you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
