Learning a Trade Online

Winslow AZ student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Winslow AZ students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Winslow AZ trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are numerous trade schools in the  Winslow AZ area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Winslow AZ area trade schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Winslow AZ is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might indicate that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Winslow AZ area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Winslow AZ area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Winslow AZ contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Arizona and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Winslow AZ, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Winslow, Arizona

Winslow (Navajo: Béésh Sinil) is a city in Navajo County, Arizona, in the United States. According to the 2010 census, the population of the city is 9,655.[2] It is located approximately 75 miles (121 km) SE of Flagstaff, 320 miles (510 km) W of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and 329 miles (529 km) SE of Las Vegas.

Winslow was named for either Edward F. Winslow, president of St. Louis and San Francisco Rail Road, which owned one half of the old Atlantic and Pacific Railroad, or Tom Winslow, a prospector who lived in the area.[4]

The last Harvey House (La Posada Hotel) opened in 1930. It was designed by Mary Colter. The hotel closed in 1957 and was used by the Santa Fe Railway for offices. The railroad abandoned La Posada in 1994 and announced plans to tear it down. It was bought and restored by Allan Affeldt[5] and it currently serves as a hotel.[6]
