Learning a Trade Online

Dowling MI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Dowling MI students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Dowling MI trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Dowling MI area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Dowling MI area trade programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help assess the quality of a vocational school near Dowling MI is how long it has been in operation. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also signify that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Dowling MI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Dowling MI area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Dowling MI company if they can give you some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Michigan and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Dowling MI, check that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
