But with numerous vocational schools to choose from, exactly how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you need to make certain that you will receive the extensive training required to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is reputable and well regarded. Some students make the mistake of selecting a vocational school just because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Or they might gravitate to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are critical considerations when evaluating trade school options, but they should not be the only ones. Added factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover several of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online programs.

Trade Schools Online

Wayside WV student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Wayside WV students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for example learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Wayside WV trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Wayside WV area and across the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Wayside WV area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Wayside WV is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Wayside WV area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Wayside WV area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Wayside WV contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in West Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Wayside WV, confirm that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

    Sites Homestead

The Sites Homestead, also known as the Wayside Inn or the Sites Inn, is located near Seneca Rocks, West Virginia. The log house was built by Jacob Sites circa 1839 below the Seneca Rocks ridge. The house was expanded in the mid-1870s with a frame addition, remaining in the Sites family until it was acquired by the U.S. Forest Service in 1968 as part of Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area in Monongahela National Forest. The house had been used as a storage shed for some time and was in poor condition. It was restored by the Forest Service in the 1980s and became a temporary visitor center in 1992 after the Seneca Rocks visitor center burned.[2] It is now part of the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center facility, operated by the Forest Service.[3]
