Online Trade Schools

Horsepen VA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Horsepen VA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Horsepen VA contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what degrees or certifications they hold.
