Learning a Vocation Online

Great Falls VA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Great Falls VA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online instruction with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Great Falls VA trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to earn, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Great Falls VA area and all over the United States to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Great Falls VA area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you get an excellent education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Also, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Great Falls VA is how long it has been in business. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Great Falls VA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Great Falls VA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Great Falls VA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with several of the students and get their comments relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Virginia and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Great Falls VA, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
