Learning a Trade Online

Thompsons Station TN student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Thompsons Station TN students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Thompsons Station TN trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Thompsons Station TN area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Thompsons Station TN area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you acquire a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Thompsons Station TN is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not qualified to train the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Thompsons Station TN area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working relationships with Thompsons Station TN area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Thompsons Station TN contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Tennessee and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Thompsons Station TN, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
