But with numerous vocational schools to pick from, just how do you go about locating the ideal one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will receive the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some potential students make the error of enrolling in a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are important considerations when evaluating vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Additional factors including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover some of those questions shortly in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are offered including the availability of online schools.

Online Vocational Schools

Warner SD student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Warner SD students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will incorporate online instruction with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Warner SD trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Warner SD area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Warner SD area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Warner SD is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Warner SD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Warner SD area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Warner SD contractor if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in South Dakota and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Warner SD, check that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
