Online Vocational Schools

Oelrichs SD student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Oelrichs SD students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online training, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Things to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Oelrichs SD trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Oelrichs SD area and throughout the United States to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first 2 factors you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Oelrichs SD area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, it may assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Oelrichs SD is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or jobs in the Oelrichs SD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Oelrichs SD area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Oelrichs SD contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in South Dakota and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Oelrichs SD, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
