Online Trade Schools

Clear Lake SD student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Clear Lake SD students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online classes, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Clear Lake SD trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Clear Lake SD area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of key qualifiers when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two variables you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Clear Lake SD area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, some states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Clear Lake SD is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate might signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It may also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Clear Lake SD area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Clear Lake SD area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Clear Lake SD contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in South Dakota and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Clear Lake SD, confirm that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
