Learning a Trade Online

Wakefield RI student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Wakefield RI students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online classes, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Things to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Wakefield RI trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Wakefield RI area and across the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two factors you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Wakefield RI area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Wakefield RI is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It might also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Wakefield RI area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Wakefield RI area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Wakefield RI contracting company if they can provide some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to several of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Rhode Island and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Wakefield RI, verify that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
