Learning a Vocation Online

Sutherlin OR student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Sutherlin OR students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be suitable for online learning, such as studying driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and dropped out. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Sutherlin OR area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Sutherlin OR area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Sutherlin OR company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Oregon and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Sutherlin OR, check that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
