However with numerous trade schools to choose from, just how do you approach locating the best one? Not only do you have to confirm that you will get the comprehensive training necessary to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of potential students make the mistake of enrolling in a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they might be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are important factors when analyzing vocational school options, but they should not be the only ones. Additional considerations such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will cover a few of those questions later in this post. But to start with, let’s look at a few of the vocation options that are available as well as the availability of online programs.

Vocational Schools Online

Portsmouth NH student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Portsmouth NH students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online learning, for instance studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Portsmouth NH trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Portsmouth NH area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Portsmouth NH area vocational programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you get a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Portsmouth NH is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Portsmouth NH area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Portsmouth NH area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by supplying practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Portsmouth NH contracting company if they can provide some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in New Hampshire and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Portsmouth NH, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

    Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Portsmouth is a city in Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 21,233,[2] and in 2017 the estimated population was 21,796.[1] A historic seaport and popular summer tourist destination on the Piscataqua River bordering the state of Maine, Portsmouth was formerly the home of the Strategic Air Command's Pease Air Force Base, since converted to Portsmouth International Airport at Pease.

American Indians of the Abenaki and other Algonquian languages-speaking nations, and their predecessors, inhabited the territory of coastal New Hampshire for thousands of years before European contact.

The first known European to explore and write about the area was Martin Pring in 1603. The Piscataqua River is a tidal estuary with a swift current, but forms a good natural harbor. The west bank of the harbor was settled by English colonists in 1630 and named Strawbery Banke, after the many wild strawberries growing there. The village was fortified by Fort William and Mary. Strategically located for trade between upstream industries and mercantile interests abroad, the port prospered. Fishing, lumber and shipbuilding were principal businesses of the region.[3]Enslaved Africans were imported as laborers as early as 1645 and were integral to building the city's prosperity.[4] Portsmouth was part of the Triangle Trade, which made significant profits from slavery.
