But with so many vocational schools to pick from, just how do you approach finding the ideal one? Not only do you need to make sure that you will get the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many potential students make the error of enrolling in a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or where the work. Or they may be attracted to the one that has the most affordable tuition. Of course the location and cost of the programs are significant factors when analyzing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Additional variables including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you must know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will review some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at some of the trade options that are available as well as the accessibility of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Trenton NE student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Trenton NE students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, such as learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Trenton NE trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are many technical schools in the  Trenton NE area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Trenton NE area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may earn Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Trenton NE is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Trenton NE area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Trenton NE area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Trenton NE company if they can give you some tips. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Nebraska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Trenton NE, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.
