Learning a Vocation Online

Atkinson NE student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Atkinson NE students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though learning online is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online training, for example studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers comprehensive practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Atkinson NE trade schoolsOnce you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of trade schools in the  Atkinson NE area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you will want to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Atkinson NE area trade programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you receive an excellent education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Atkinson NE is how long it has been in business. A negatively ranked or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Atkinson NE area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Atkinson NE area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Atkinson NE company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk with some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Nebraska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Atkinson NE, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
