Online Vocational Schools

Dodson MT student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Dodson MT students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online classes, for example learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with time constraints to acquire a new profession.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Dodson MT trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Dodson MT area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Dodson MT area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Dodson MT is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may indicate that students were unhappy with the program and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment in the Dodson MT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are comparing have working partnerships with Dodson MT area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Dodson MT contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak with a few of the students and get their opinions regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Montana and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Dodson MT, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
