Online Vocational Schools

Potts Camp MS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Potts Camp MS students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and delivers in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for those with time constraints to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Potts Camp MS trade schoolsWhen you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are numerous vocational schools in the  Potts Camp MS area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Potts Camp MS area vocational schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make certain that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you obtain a superior education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, many states require that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Potts Camp MS is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also mean that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Potts Camp MS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Potts Camp MS area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing practical training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Potts Camp MS contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to several of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Mississippi and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Potts Camp MS, verify that the schools you are comparing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
