Learning a Trade Online

Biloxi MS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Biloxi MS students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, learning to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be suitable for online classes, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to learn a new trade.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Biloxi MS trade schoolsAfter you have selected the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Biloxi MS area and all over the Country to choose from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of important qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Biloxi MS area trade schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help assess the quality of a trade school near Biloxi MS is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It may also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive list of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Biloxi MS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Biloxi MS area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Biloxi MS company if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Mississippi and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Biloxi MS, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

    Biloxi, Mississippi

Biloxi (/bɪˈlʌksi/ bi-LUK-see) is a city and one of two county seats of Harrison County, Mississippi, United States (the other seat being the adjoining city of Gulfport). The 2010 United States Census recorded the population as 44,054,[3] and in 2016 the estimated population was 45,975.[4] The area was first settled by French colonists.

The city is part of the Gulfport–Biloxi metropolitan area and the Gulfport-Biloxi-Pascagoula, MS Combined Statistical Area. Pre-Katrina, Biloxi was the third-largest city in Mississippi, behind Jackson and Gulfport. Due to the widespread destruction and flooding, many refugees left the city. Post-Katrina, the population of Biloxi decreased, and it became the fifth-largest city in the state, being surpassed by Hattiesburg and Southaven.[5]

The beachfront of Biloxi lies directly on the Mississippi Sound, with barrier islands scattered off the coast and into the Gulf of Mexico. Keesler Air Force Base lies within the city and is home to the 81st Training Wing and the 403d Wing of the U.S. Air Force Reserve.
