Learning a Trade Online

Columbia LA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Columbia LA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for students with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Columbia LA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you wish to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.  Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and quit. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Columbia LA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Columbia LA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also provides job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Columbia LA contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Louisiana and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Columbia LA, confirm that the programs you are looking at offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
