Union Center, Wisconsin

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 200 people, 95 households, and 58 families residing in the village. The population density was 266.7 inhabitants per square mile (103.0/km2). There were 109 housing units at an average density of 145.3 per square mile (56.1/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.5% White and 1.5% Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.

There were 95 households of which 21.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% were married couples living together, 4.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.3% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.9% were non-families. 32.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.57.

The median age in the village was 49 years. 15.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 18% were from 25 to 44; 37% were from 45 to 64; and 22% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 47.0% male and 53.0% female.

Washington Island (Wisconsin)

Washington Island lies about 7 miles (11 km) northeast of the tip of Door Peninsula in Door County, Wisconsin.[1] The island has a year-round population of 708 people according to the 2010 census. It has a land area of 60.89 km² (23.51 sq mi) and comprises over 92 percent of the land area of the town of Washington, as well as all of its population. The unincorporated community of Detroit Harbor is situated on the island. It is the largest in a group of islands that includes Plum, Detroit, Hog, Pilot, Fish, and Rock Islands. These islands form the Town of Washington. Detroit Harbor bay is on the south side of the island. A large part of Washington Island's economy is based on tourism.[2]

Washington Island is approximately 5 miles (8 km) wide by 6 miles (10 km) long. Together with the Door Peninsula, Washington Island forms a treacherous strait that connects Green Bay to the rest of Lake Michigan. Early French explorers named this water way, now littered with shipwrecks, Porte des Morts, which literally means "Door of the Dead" or, more colloquially, "Death's Door", giving both Door County and Door Peninsula their names.[3]

Washington Island is one of a string of islands (which are an outcropping of the Niagara Escarpment) stretching across the entrance of Green Bay from the Door Peninsula in Wisconsin to the Garden Peninsula in Michigan. Its earliest known name is "Wassekiganeso", an Ojibwa name that translates to "his breast is shining" and apparently refers to the glint of the sun that at times reflects off the limestone cliffs.[4]

Westboro Baptist Church

Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an American church known for its use of inflammatory hate speech, especially against LGBT+ people (homophobia and transphobia), Catholics (anti-Catholicism), Orthodox Christians (anti-Orthodoxy), atheists (anti-atheism), Muslims (Islamophobia), Jews (antisemitism), Romani people (antiziganism), and U.S. soldiers and politicians (anti-Americanism).[4][5] Multiple sources describe it as a hate group[6] and the WBC is monitored as such by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. The church has been involved in actions against gay people since at least 1991, when it sought a crackdown on homosexual activity at Gage Park six blocks northwest of the church.[7] In addition to conducting anti-gay protests at military funerals, the organization pickets celebrity funerals and public events.[8] Protests have also been held against Jews and Catholics, and some protests have included WBC members stomping on the American flag or flying the flag upside down on a flagpole. The church also has made statements such as "thank God for dead soldiers," "God blew up the troops," "thank God for 9/11," and "God hates America."[9] The church has faced several accusations of brainwashing[10][11][12] and has been criticised for resembling a cult.[13][14][15]

The church is headquartered in a residential neighborhood on the west side of Topeka about 3 miles (5 km) west of the Kansas State Capitol. Its first public service was held on the afternoon of November 27, 1955.[16] The church was headed by Fred Phelps before his death in March 2014, though church representatives said the church had had no defined leader for some time before his death.[17] The church consists primarily of members of Phelps's extended family,[18] and in 2011, the church stated that it had about 40 members.[19]

The WBC is not affiliated with any Baptist denomination, although it describes itself as Primitive Baptist and following the five points of Calvinism.[1] Many other Baptist churches, Baptist-affiliated seminaries, and Baptist conventions, including the Baptist World Alliance and the Southern Baptist Convention (the two largest Baptist denominations), have denounced the WBC over the years.[20] In addition, other mainstream Christian denominations have condemned the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church.[21]

Windsor, Wisconsin

Windsor is a village and former town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,286 at the 2000 census. The communities of Lake Windsor, Morrisonville, and Token Creek are located within the village. Windsor voted to incorporate as a village on November 3, 2015; prior to its incorporation, it was a town, and a portion of the town was a census-designated place.[4] Windsor is a part of the Census Bureau's Madison metropolitan statistical area.

A portion of the former town was part of a disputed annexation by the Village of DeForest. In July 2004 the village and town reached a settlement in which part of the disputed area would be annexed by the village and part would remain with the town. In addition, the town and village agreed to exchange other less populated land.

While visited in the late 1830s, the first settler to the town was William Lawrence, who came from the state of Vermont in 1841. He later served in the Civil War. James Morrison settled in the town in 1843 at what is now Morrisonville.[5]

Wyocena, Wisconsin

Wyocena is a village in Columbia County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 768 at the 2010 census. The village is located within the Town of Wyocena. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.55 square miles (4.01 km2), of which, 1.42 square miles (3.68 km2) of it is land and 0.13 square miles (0.34 km2) is water.[1]

Wyocena is served by Wis 16 and Wis 22. Wis 16 heads east to Columbus and west to Poynette and Portage. Wis 22 heads north to Pardeeville and Montello and south to US Route 51 at North Leeds. Wis 22 South is the most direct way to get to Madison via US 51 South.

Union Grove, Wisconsin

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 4,915 people, 1,881 households, and 1,269 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,989.9 inhabitants per square mile (768.3/km2). There were 1,960 housing units at an average density of 793.5 per square mile (306.4/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 96.6% White, 0.5% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.6% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.

There were 1,881 households of which 37.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 13.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 5.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 32.5% were non-families. 27.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.

The median age in the village was 37.4 years. 26.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 8.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.3% were from 25 to 44; 27.3% were from 45 to 64; and 12% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the village was 48.5% male and 51.5% female.

Waterford, Wisconsin

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.68 square miles (6.94 km2), of which, 2.58 square miles (6.68 km2) of it is land and 0.10 square miles (0.26 km2) is water.[1]

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 5,368 people, 2,114 households, and 1,483 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,080.6 inhabitants per square mile (803.3/km2). There were 2,272 housing units at an average density of 880.6 per square mile (340.0/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.0% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.0% of the population.

There were 2,114 households of which 36.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 29.8% were non-families. 24.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.04.

Westby, Wisconsin

Westby was named after general store owner and Civil War Union soldier Ole T. Westby of Biri, Norway, where many of the city's Norwegian-American settlers originated.[6]Westby Coon-Prairie Lutheran Church in Westby was established in 1851. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad began servicing Westby and surrounding townships in August of 1879, and the La Crosse and Southeastern Railroad began service to the area in January of 1905, though both railroads have long since ceased local operations. The Westby depot was torn down in 1970.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 2,200 people, 929 households, and 575 families residing in the city. The population density was 849.4 inhabitants per square mile (328.0/km2). There were 996 housing units at an average density of 384.6 per square mile (148.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.0% White, 0.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.0% of the population.

There were 929 households of which 29.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 38.1% were non-families. 33.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.

Winnebago County, Wisconsin

Winnebago County is a county in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, the population was 166,994.[1] Its county seat is Oshkosh.[2] It was named for the historic Winnebago people, a federally recognized Native American tribe now known as the Ho-Chunk Nation. Chief Oshkosh was a leader in the area.

The region was occupied by several Native American tribes in the period of European encounter, including the Sauk, Fox, Menominee, and Ojibwa (known as Chippewa in the US). French traders from what is now Canada had early interaction with them, as did French Jesuit missionaries, who sought to convert them to Catholicism. European and American settlement encroached on their traditional territories, and the United States negotiated treaties in the mid-19th century to keep pushing the Indians to the west.

Winnebago County was created in 1840 by European Americans and organized in 1848.[3] The name Winnebago is of Algonquin origin, with variations used by the Fox and Potowatomi to refer to the Fox River below Lake Winnebago, which sometimes got muddy and full of fish.[4] It means 'people dwelling by the fetid or ill-smelling water', which may also refer to a sulfur spring.[5] The county seat, Oshkosh, was incorporated as a city in 1853, when it already had a population of nearly 2,800.[6]

Zachow, Wisconsin

Zachow is an unincorporated community located in Shawano County, Wisconsin, United States. Zachow is east of Bonduel, in the towns of Angelica, and Hartland. Although it is unincorporated, Zachow has been assigned the ZIP code of 54182.[2]
