New York City

The City of New York, usually called either New York City (NYC) or simply New York (NY), is the most populous city in the United States and in the U.S. state of New York.[11] With an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698[7] distributed over a land area of about 302.6 square miles (784 km2),[12][13] New York is also the most densely populated major city in the United States.[14] Located at the southern tip of the state of New York, the city is the center of the New York metropolitan area, the largest metropolitan area in the world by urban landmass[15] and one of the world's most populous megacities,[16][17] with an estimated 20,320,876 people in its 2017 Metropolitan Statistical Area and 23,876,155 residents in its Combined Statistical Area.[4][5] A global power city,[18] New York City has been described as the cultural,[19][20][21][22] financial,[23][24] and media capital of the world,[25][26] and exerts a significant impact upon commerce,[24] entertainment, research, technology, education, politics, tourism, art, fashion, and sports. The city's fast pace[27][28][29] has inspired the term New York minute.[30] Home to the headquarters of the United Nations,[31] New York is an important center for international diplomacy.[32][33]

Situated on one of the world's largest natural harbors,[34][35] New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which is a separate county of the State of New York.[36] The five boroughs – Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, The Bronx, and Staten Island – were consolidated into a single city in 1898.[37] The city and its metropolitan area constitute the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States.[38] As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York,[39][40][41] making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world.[40][42][43] New York City is home to more than 3.2 million residents born outside the United States,[44] the largest foreign-born population of any city in the world.[45] In 2017, the New York metropolitan area produced a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of US$1.73 trillion.[9] If greater New York City were a sovereign state, it would have the 12th highest GDP in the world.[46] New York is home to the highest number of billionaires of any city in the world.[47]

New York City traces its origins to a trading post founded by colonists from the Dutch Republic in 1624 on Lower Manhattan; the post was named New Amsterdam in 1626.[48] The city and its surroundings came under English control in 1664[48] and were renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York.[49] New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790.[50] It has been the country's largest city since 1790.[51] The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to the U.S. by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries[52] and is an international symbol of the U.S. and its ideals of liberty and peace.[53] In the 21st century, New York has emerged as a global node of creativity and entrepreneurship,[54]social tolerance,[55] and environmental sustainability,[56][57] and as a symbol of freedom and cultural diversity.[58]

Woodbury, Orange County, New York

Woodbury is a town and village in Orange County, New York, United States. The town population was 10,686 at the 2010 census.[1] The village was incorporated in 2006 and comprises all of the town that is not part of the village of Harriman.[2] The region was once called Woodbury Clove. It is part of the Poughkeepsie–Newburgh–Middletown, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area. Woodbury is in the southeastern part of Orange County. The town also has 4 schools part of the Monroe-Woodbury Central school District.

The Town of Woodbury (which comprises the hamlets of Central Valley and Highland Mills) and the area formerly known as the hamlet of Woodbury Falls was officially created on December 19, 1889 by an act of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. The first town meeting was held on March 4 the following year, with John A. Patterson presiding as Supervisor. The second Supervisor was James Seaman. Even though the land is no longer used for farming, the Seaman family property can still be identified by a sign which reads “Sweet Clover Farm” along Route 32 at the northern end of town.[3] This is now the home of Palaia Vineyards.

The Town of Woodbury was actually created twice; the first time in 1863, when the Board of Supervisors approved the division of Monroe into the three communities of Monroe, Southfields and Highland. The Highland portion was what would become Woodbury in 1889. Objections to this arose, and two years later the Legislature was asked to overrule the Board's decision; it did, by recreating the old Town of Monroe. In 1889 the Board of Supervisors reinstated the original separation, and the town now known as Woodbury was reborn.

Novo Amor

Ali John Meredith-Lacey (born 11 August 1991), better known under the moniker Novo Amor, is a Welsh multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, sound designer and producer. Lacey rose to prominence after the release of his debut EP Woodgate, NY in March 2014.[1]

Lacey's first Novo Amor EP, Woodgate, NY, was released 31 March 2014 on Norwegian label Brilliance Records.[1] Building on the success of the EP, Lacey released "Faux", a collaboration with Ed Tullett, on Dumont Dumont and Brilliance Records on 23 June 2014.[4] In the same month, Lacey also signed to UK publisher BDi Music, part of Bucks Music Group.[5]

"Callow", a further single as Novo Amor, was released 17 November 2014.[6] This was followed by "Welcome to the Jungle", a Guns N' Roses cover for an AXE/Lynx advertising campaign on 6 January 2015,[7] its video directed by Nabil.[8] Lacey toured Germany, Switzerland and Austria across April and May 2015,[9] and was nominated for 2 awards at the Music Week Sync Awards for the use of his music commercially.[10] "Anchor", another single as Novo Amor, was released 23 October 2015.[11]

Yorktown Heights, New York

Yorktown Heights is in the town of Yorktown, New York, in northern Westchester County, 45 miles from New York City, with forty square miles of rolling hills, farmland, residential areas and light industry including the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center. First settled in 1683, Yorktown was of strategic importance during the American Revolution, with the Pines Bridge crossing of the Croton River guarded by the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, an integrated unit which included African Americans and Native Americans. Yorktown was incorporated in 1788 and named in commemoration of the Franco-American decisive victory at Yorktown, Virginia. The Yorktown Heights Railroad Station, which last had passenger service on the New York Central Railroad's Putnam Division in 1958, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.[4]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 7,972 people, 2,629 households, and 2,163 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,399.3/mi² (540.0/km²). There were 2,661 housing units at an average density of 467.1/mi² (180.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 90.49% White, 2.41% African American, 0.06% Native American, 4.69% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.85% from other races, and 1.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.59% of the population.

There were 2,629 households out of which 44.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.0% were married couples living together, 7.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.7% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.02 and the average family size was 3.37.

Woodhaven, Queens

Woodhaven is a middle-class neighborhood located in the central section of the New York City borough of Queens. It is bordered on the north by Park Lane South and Forest Park, on the east by Richmond Hill to the east, on the south by Ozone Park and Atlantic Avenue, and on the west by Brooklyn.[3]

Woodhaven, once known as Woodville, has one of the greatest tree populations in the borough and is known for its proximity to the hiking trails of Forest Park.[4] The neighborhood is part of Queens Community Board 9.[5] Woodhaven's ZIP Code is 11421. Woodhaven is served by New York City Department of Education School District #27.[6]

Woodhaven contains a mixture of urban and suburban land uses, with both low-density residential and commercial sections.[7][8] It retains the small-town feel of bygone days and is home to people of many different ethnicities.[9][10]

Yorkville, Manhattan

Yorkville is a neighborhood in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Its southern boundary is East 79th Street, its northern East 96th Street, its western Third Avenue, and its eastern the East River.[2]

In August 1776, George Washington stationed half of his Continental Army in Manhattan, with many troops in the Yorkville area in defensive positions along the East River to protect the other half of his army if they were to retreat from Brooklyn, and to inflict damage on invading land and sea forces.[4] Following the Battle of Long Island defeat on August 27, the Continentals implemented an orderly pivoting retreat in the Yorkville area, leading the enemy to entice the Continentals to fight by piping "Fly Away", about a fox running away from hounds. The Continentals' disciplined northerly retreat led to the successful Battle of Harlem Heights in September 1776.[5]

In 1815, the Upper East Side was a farmland and market garden district.[6] The Boston Post Road traversed the Upper East Side, locally called the Eastern Post Road; milepost 6 was near the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 81st Street. From 1833 to 1837 the New York and Harlem Railroad, one of the earliest railway systems in the United States, was extended through the Upper East Side along Fourth Avenue (later renamed Park Avenue).[7] A hamlet grew near the 86th Street station, becoming the Yorkville neighborhood as gradual yet steady commercial development occurred. The current street grid was laid-out between 1839 and 1844 as part of the Commissioners' Plan of 1811, so the Eastern Post Road was abandoned. The community had been referred to as Yorkville before 1867.[8]

Victoria Woodhull

Victoria Claflin Woodhull, later Victoria Woodhull Martin (September 23, 1838 – June 9, 1927), was an American leader of the women's suffrage movement. In 1872, she ran for President of the United States. While many historians and authors agree that Woodhull was the first woman to run for President of the United States, some have questioned that priority given issues with the legality of her run. They disagree with classifying it as a true candidacy because she was younger than the constitutionally mandated age of 35. However, election coverage by contemporary newspapers does not suggest age was a significant issue; this may, however, be due to the fact that no one took the candidacy seriously (Woodhull's 35th birthday was in September 1873, seven months after the March inauguration).

An activist for women's rights and labor reforms, Woodhull was also an advocate of "free love", by which she meant the freedom to marry, divorce and bear children without social restriction or government interference.[2] "They cannot roll back the rising tide of reform," she often said. "The world moves."[3]

Woodhull twice went from rags to riches, her first fortune being made on the road as a magnetic healer[4] before she joined the spiritualist movement in the 1870s.[5] Authorship of many of her articles is disputed (many of her speeches on these topics were collaborations between Woodhull, her backers, and her second husband, Colonel James Blood[6]). However, despite her ethical problems, her role as a representative of these movements was powerful. Together with her sister, Tennessee Claflin, she was the first woman to operate a brokerage firm on Wall Street, making a second, and more reputable fortune.[7] They were among the first women to found a newspaper in the United States, Woodhull & Claflin's Weekly, which began publication in 1870.[8]

Youngstown, New York

The village's early growth was under the protection of Fort Niagara.[citation needed] The village was destroyed by the British in 1813 during the War of 1812.[citation needed] The Village of Youngstown was incorporated in 1854, named after John Young .[4]

Youngstown is an historic village located at the northwestern corner of the state where the Niagara River flows into Lake Ontario. In an area known to the Indians for hundreds of years, the French explorer La Salle left his mark by building a small fort in 1670, less than a mile north of where the village now stands. The French gained control of the Great Lakes area and by 1727 built the "Castle" which became the centerpiece of Old Fort Niagara.

John Young, who lived across the river, saw opportunities on this side and built a store on the landing area in 1809. In 1811, he bought Lots 1 and 2 of the Mile Reserve. These included all the property from what is now the north side of Falkner Park and as far south as Campbell Street and from the river eastward to what is now the Niagara Scenic Parkway.
