Trade Schools Online

Thornton KY student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Thornton KY students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online training, such as learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Thornton KY trade schoolsWhen you have picked the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Thornton KY area and across the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of relevant qualifications when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the initial 2 variables you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Thornton KY area technical programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it may help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Thornton KY is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the best of schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Thornton KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Numerous training programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Check if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Thornton KY area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the tech you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Thornton KY contractor if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their opinions relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk with a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Thornton KY, verify that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Thornton, a 1946 graduate of New Albany High School, first gained entry into the gasoline industry working at a station owned by his stepfather. In 1951, at the age of 24, he became one of the partners of Dixie Dance gas stations. Thornton eventually joined Ashland Inc. in 1955 maintaining a relationship with them until 1970. The first "Thorntons" location opened in 1971 in Clarksville, Indiana. The original site featured a kiosk building and a full-service attendant. In the 1980s Thorntons transitioned from kiosk locations to convenience stores and grew to over 100 locations.

In 2013 Thorntons introduced a larger store with an expanded food program in select Louisville, Kentucky and Southern Indiana stores.[2] In 2016, this platform was expanded in select Chicago metropolitan area stores along with the roll out of Unleaded15TM. Unleaded15 provides an octane rating of 88 and contains approximately 15% ethanol.[3]
