Online Vocational Schools

Liberty KY student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Liberty KY students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Liberty KY trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Liberty KY area and across the United States to pick from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two variables you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Liberty KY area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Liberty KY is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Liberty KY area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught in conjunction with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Liberty KY area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Liberty KY contractor if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of the classes so that you can see how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with several of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Last, talk to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Kentucky and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Liberty KY, check that the schools you are considering offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.
