Online Vocational Schools

Spearville KS student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Spearville KS students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. Although online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training can be suitable for online education, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Spearville KS trade schoolsAfter you have picked the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Spearville KS area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifiers when making school assessments. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Spearville KS area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you obtain a quality education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Spearville KS is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also mean that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Spearville KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are comparing have working relationships with Spearville KS area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Spearville KS contracting company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Spearville KS, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

    Spearville, Kansas

The land for the townsite of Spearville was deeded by the Santa Fe to the Arkansas Valley Town Company in March, 1873, and was surveyed and platted. The town was named for Alden H. Speare, railroad director and president of the town company.[7] The city name appeared as both Spearville and Speareville in the early days.[7]

Spearville's first permanent residents were the Santa Fe section foreman, Jonas Stafford, and his family. Stafford was stationed at this particular watering spot beginning January, 1875. Stafford's wife and daughters opened an eating house, mainly for the accommodation of the section hands.[7]

Toward the end of October 1892, Spearville was the site of the second robbery of the Bill Doolin Gang, which had been formed in the aftermath of the Dalton Gang's demise in Coffeyville, Kansas. The Ford County Bank was robbed of $1,697 by Doolin and two members of his gang. One of the outlaws, Ollie (Ol) Yantis, was soon tracked down and killed by a posse.[9]
