new skills training sign Gridley KSChoosing to enter into a new occupation and enroll in a vocational school near Gridley KS are serious decisions that will profoundly impact your future career. But with so many vocational schools to select from, just how do you approach locating the right one? Not only do you need to confirm that you will receive the comprehensive training required to succeed in your new occupation, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of students make the error of selecting a trade school simply because the campus is nearest to their home or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the school that has the lowest tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Added considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So prior to beginning your evaluations and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will review several of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Learning a Vocation Online

Gridley KS student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Gridley KS students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online classes, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will combine online instruction with on-campus lab work, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to ask before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Gridley KS trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous technical schools in the  Gridley KS area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a list of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will undoubtedly be the first 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Gridley KS area technical schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you receive a quality education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Gridley KS is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their first day of training, so consider it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and complete the program. A lower completion rate might suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and dropped out. It might also indicate that the instructors were not competent to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Gridley KS area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Gridley KS area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Gridley KS company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Speak to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Kansas and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Gridley KS, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family issues.
