Online Trade Schools

Midvale ID student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Midvale ID students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Points to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Midvale ID trade schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you desire to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Midvale ID area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the first two aspects you will look at. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Midvale ID area trade schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Verify that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Midvale ID is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate could signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also suggest that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which can produce more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Midvale ID area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most technical programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or labor unions. Check if the schools you are comparing have referring relationships with Midvale ID area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working under regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Midvale ID contracting company if they can give you some tips. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to some of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in Idaho and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Midvale ID, check that the programs you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.
