Vocational Schools Online

Gales Ferry CT student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become very popular with Gales Ferry CT students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it might not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online training, for instance studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before choosing an online program for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the syllabus. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with limited time to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Gales Ferry CT trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your list of schools. That’s why it is extremely important to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school evaluations. Following are some additional ones that you should explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Gales Ferry CT area trade programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping ensure that you acquire a superior education, it may assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states mandate that the  training course be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Gales Ferry CT is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school normally will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A low completion rate may signify that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to train the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Gales Ferry CT area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of businesses or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Gales Ferry CT area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a valuable experience by supplying practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Gales Ferry CT contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Also bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Speak to several of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Connecticut and what degrees or certifications they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Gales Ferry CT, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.

    Gales Ferry, Connecticut

Gales Ferry is a village in the town of Ledyard, Connecticut, United States. It is located along the eastern bank of the Thames River. The village developed as a result of having a ferry to Uncasville located at this site, and from which the village was named. Gales Ferry was listed as a census-designated place for the 2010 Census,[1] with a population of 1,162.[2]

Much of the core of the original settlement at the site of the former ferry has been included in two separate historic districts, each with several farmstead buildings from the late colonial and early national periods (late 18th and early 19th century). The two historic districts are irregularly shaped, and are separated by a railroad cut and some non-contributing buildings.

Several farmsteads that are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places are located close to Gales Ferry. These are the Nathan Lester House on Vinegar Hill Road, the Perkins-Bill House at 1040 Long Cove Road, and the Capt. Mark Stoddard Farmstead at 24 Vinegar Hill Road.
