new skills training sign Antonito CODeciding to work in a new profession and enroll in a trade school near Antonito CO are important decisions that will greatly affect your long term career. However with so many trade schools to select from, just how do you go about finding the right one? Not only do you have to ascertain that you will get the extensive training necessary to be successful in your new field, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Some students make the mistake of choosing a trade school just because the campus is closest to their home or place of employment. Others might gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Naturally the location and cost of the training are critical factors when evaluating trade school options, but they can not be the only ones. Additional considerations including accreditation and the reputation of the schools are critical as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions you should be asking in order to get the information to make a final choice. We will address a few of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the vocation options that are offered as well as the availability of online schools.

Online Trade Schools

Antonito CO student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Antonito CO students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. Although learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be suitable for online training, for instance learning safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to determine before choosing an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of practical training devoted to the course of study. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both suitable for online education and provides comprehensive hands-on training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for students with time constraints to acquire a new vocation.

Points to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Antonito CO trade schoolsAfter you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to narrow down your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Antonito CO area and across the Country to choose from. That’s why it is very important to have a checklist of important qualifications when making school comparisons. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you should research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Numerous Antonito CO area technical programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They can receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Make sure that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you receive a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Additionally, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Antonito CO is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the course and quit. It may also signify that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Antonito CO area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and trade programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working relationships with Antonito CO area contractors in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, talk to the technician you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Antonito CO contracting company if they can provide some pointers. Additionally bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in Colorado and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Antonito CO, verify that the programs you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
