Online Trade Schools

Shafter CA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become very popular with Shafter CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the ideal option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain elements of the training may be appropriate for online education, such as learning safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will combine online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is very important to find out before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both suitable for online education and provides in-depth practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Shafter CA trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many vocational schools in the  Shafter CA area and throughout the Country to choose from. That’s why it is essential to have a list of relevant qualifiers when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial 2 aspects you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Shafter CA area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you receive an excellent education, it can assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Also, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Shafter CA is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so consider it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate could suggest that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It might also indicate that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may mean more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help grads secure apprenticeships or employment in the Shafter CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating technical and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Shafter CA area professionals in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Shafter CA contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within driving distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and experience the interaction between students and teachers. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to some of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Shafter CA, verify that the schools you are considering offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Finally, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.
