Learning a Vocation Online

Independence CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Independence CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a degree or certificate, it might not be the ideal option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be mastered through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be suitable for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will blend online instruction with on campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides comprehensive practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new profession.

What to Ask Vocational Schools

Questions to ask Independence CA trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the trade and type of certificate or degree that you desire to acquire, either online or on campus, you can start to narrow down your list of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many technical schools in the  Independence CA area and all over the United States to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school evaluations. As formerly mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the first two aspects you will consider. Following are some additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Independence CA area technical schools have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They can acquire Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, it can assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states mandate that the  training program be accredited for it to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Independence CA is how long it has been in business. A negatively rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate may signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It could also suggest that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Independence CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most trade programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Independence CA area companies in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the technician you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Independence CA company if they can give you some pointers. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school needs to be within driving distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how large they are and experience the interaction between students and instructors. Speak to a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in California and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evening or on weekends near Independence CA, check that the programs you are comparing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.
