We will address some of those questions later in this article. But to start with, let’s look at some of the trade options that are offered as well as the accessibility of online programs.

Learning a Trade Online

Grass Valley CA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Grass Valley CA students and a growing number of accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online learning, for instance studying safety and driving regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to ask before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the course of study. One way to help ensure that a trade school program is both appropriate for online education and provides in-depth hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a convenient way for students with time constraints to acquire a new trade.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Grass Valley CA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you would like to attain, either on campus or online, you can begin to decrease your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Grass Valley CA area and across the Country to pick from. That’s why it is essential to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the initial two factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  Many Grass Valley CA area vocational schools have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you get a superior education, it can assist in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, many states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One indicator to help measure the quality of a vocational school near Grass Valley CA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students who enroll in and complete the course. A lower completion rate might indicate that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It may also mean that the teachers were not qualified to train the students. It’s also important that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of graduates, which can produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Grass Valley CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of trade programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are reviewing have referring relationships with Grass Valley CA area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by providing practical training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the tools that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with on the job. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Grass Valley CA contracting company if they can give you some tips. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides the added relocation costs there may be higher tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between students and teachers. Talk with some of the students and get their comments regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes in the evening or on weekends near Grass Valley CA, check that the schools you are looking at offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
