But with numerous vocational schools to select from, exactly how do you go about locating the right one? Not only do you have to make sure that you will get the complete training required to succeed in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. A number of prospective students make the mistake of choosing a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they might gravitate to the one that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the training are significant considerations when analyzing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Other considerations including reputation and accreditation of the schools are critical also. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask so you can get the information to make a final choice. We will cover some of those questions later in this post. But first, let’s look at a few of the trade options that are available as well as the availability of online schools.

Learning a Trade Online

Fairfield CA student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Fairfield CA students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a tractor trailer is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that must be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online learning, for example studying driving and safety regulations for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Many programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, such as for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online studying and delivers in-depth practical training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new vocation.

What to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Fairfield CA trade schoolsOnce you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you wish to attain, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Fairfield CA area and all over the USA to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a checklist of relevant qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two variables you will look at. Following are several additional ones that you will want to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Fairfield CA area vocational programs have acquired either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Confirm that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get an excellent education, it can help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help evaluate the quality of a trade school near Fairfield CA is how long it has been in business. A negatively reviewed or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their opening day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate could signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of alumni, which can result in more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Fairfield CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most training programs are taught together with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and vocational programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or trade unions. Check if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Fairfield CA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by providing practical training, but it also supplies employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make certain that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. Otherwise, ask a local Fairfield CA contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you can move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be difficult in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their comments concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with a few of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Fairfield CA, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family issues.
