Learning a Vocation Online

Dunnigan CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Dunnigan CA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to earn a degree or certificate, it might not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that must be learned through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Many programs will blend online instruction with on-campus practical training, for example for electrician or welding schools. So it is essential to ask before choosing an online school for any trade if there is an adequate amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to learn a new profession.

Concerns to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Dunnigan CA trade schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the trade and type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, either on campus or online, you can begin to limit your selection of schools. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to a specific program, for example HVAC technology. Make certain that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping ensure that you acquire an excellent education, it may assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Additionally, some states mandate that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

Having said that, even the top schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are considering what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the course. A low completion rate may suggest that students were disappointed with the program and dropped out. It could also indicate that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s also essential that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Dunnigan CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Many technical programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating trade and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program inside their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring relationships with Dunnigan CA area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only offers a valuable experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also supplies job opportunities and helps to establish relationships in the regional professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be using in the field. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working with regarding what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Dunnigan CA contractor if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you can move, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk with some of the students and get their opinions concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in California and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Dunnigan CA, check that the schools you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Finally, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.
