Learning a Trade Online

Corcoran CA student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Corcoran CA students and more and more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a readily available and practical way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online classes, for example studying driving and safety guidelines for truck driving schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will combine online education with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to determine before enrolling in an online school for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both suitable for online learning and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Questions to Ask Vocational School Programs

Questions to ask Corcoran CA trade schoolsAfter you have decided on the trade and type of certificate or degree that you would like to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to narrow down your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Corcoran CA area and across the United States to choose from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of key qualifications when making school assessments. As previously mentioned in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will most likely be the initial 2 factors you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  A large number of Corcoran CA area technical programs have earned either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, such as HVAC technology. Confirm that the school and program are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you obtain an excellent education, it can help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, many states require that the  training program be accredited in order to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Business? One clue to help evaluate the quality of a vocational school near Corcoran CA is how long it has been in operation. A poorly rated or a fly by night school typically will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of multiple qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage of students who enroll in and finish the program. A lower completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly important that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist grads obtain apprenticeships or jobs in the Corcoran CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Corcoran CA area contractors in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working with concerning what you should be looking for. If not, ask a local Corcoran CA contractor if they can give you some suggestions. Also keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you get as much personalized training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Corcoran CA, verify that the programs you are comparing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
