Not only do you have to confirm that you will obtain the extensive training required to be successful in your new profession, but also that the school is highly regarded and reputable. Many potential students make the error of selecting a trade school just because the campus is nearest to their residence or place of employment. Or they may be attracted to the school that charges the most affordable tuition. Of course the cost and location of the programs are important factors when assessing trade school options, but they should not be the sole ones. Added factors such as accreditation and the reputation of the schools are important as well. So before you begin evaluating and comparing trade schools, you will need to know what questions to ask in order to get the information to make a final selection. We will address a few of those questions shortly in this article. But first, let’s talk about a few of the trade options that are available including the accessibility of online programs.

Online Vocational Schools

Brentwood CA student attending online vocational programTrade Schools online have become more attractive with Brentwood CA students and increasingly more accredited programs are being offered. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to acquire a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online learning, such as learning safety and driving regulations for trucking schools or studying metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welder schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is essential to find out before enrolling in an online program for any trade if there is an appropriate amount of hands-on training devoted to the curriculum. One way to help establish est that a trade school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting organization (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are suitable for training online, it can be a practical way for those with limited time to acquire a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Brentwood CA trade schoolsOnce you have decided on the trade and type of degree or certificate that you want to obtain, either on campus or online, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are probably aware, there are a large number of technical schools in the  Brentwood CA area and throughout the Country to pick from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As previously stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will undoubtedly be the initial two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you will want to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Many Brentwood CA area technical schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may receive Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, such as HVAC technology. Make certain that the program and school are accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, which includes the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping guarantee that you acquire a superior education, it may help in securing financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently unavailable for non-accredited programs. Furthermore, a number of states require that the  training program be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a trade school near Brentwood CA is how long it has been in operation. A negatively rated or a fly by night school usually will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and complete the program. A low completion rate might signify that students were dissatisfied with the program and quit. It may also mean that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader directory of graduates, which can mean more contacts for the school to employ for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only validate that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Brentwood CA area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of training programs are taught in conjunction with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have referring partnerships with Brentwood CA area companies in the field. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the campus facilities and the tools that you will be trained on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the specialist you are working under regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Brentwood CA contracting company if they can give you some suggestions. Additionally bear in mind that unless you are willing to move, the school must be within driving distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s important that you receive as much individualized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on some of the classes so that you can observe how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with some of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Last, speak with some of the teachers and find out what their level of experience is in California and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are assessing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to go to classes at night or on weekends near Brentwood CA, verify that the programs you are comparing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, be sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, check out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family issues.

    Brentwood, California

Brentwood is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. It is located in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The population is 51,481 as of 2010, an increase of 121 percent from 23,302 at the 2000 census.[8]

Brentwood began as a community in the late 19th century, and is still known throughout the Bay Area for its agricultural products, primarily its cherries, corn and peaches. Due to urban sprawl many of the old farms and orchards have been replaced by suburban developments since 1990. Brentwood is increasingly residential, with the rate of population growth in the triple digits during the 1990s and 69% from 2000 through 2010. An official estimate showed the population increased nearly 21% during the period 2010 to 2016.

Brentwood was originally laid out on land donated from property owned by John Marsh, an East Contra Costa County pioneer who acquired Rancho Los Meganos, the land grant that Brentwood is built upon, in 1837 from Jose Noriega. Marsh was one of the wealthiest men in California and was instrumental in its becoming independent from Mexico and part of the United States. His letters extolling the potential for agriculture in California were published in newspapers throughout the East. They resulted in the first wagon trains to California. Marsh encouraged this, and allowed new arrivals to stay on his ranch until they could get settled. Rancho Los Meganos became the terminus of the California Trail.[9] Brentwood was named after Marsh's ancestral home, the town of Brentwood in the County of Essex, England.[10]
