Trade Schools Online

Lewisville AR student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become very popular with Lewisville AR students and increasingly more accredited programs are becoming available. While learning online is a very convenient and accessible way to obtain a certificate or degree, it may not be the best option for all trades or vocations. For example, training to operate a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that need to be acquired through practical training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain aspects of the training can be appropriate for online education, for instance learning driving and safety regulations for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online education with on-campus practical training, such as for electrician or welding schools. So it is crucial to find out before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is a suitable amount of hands-on training devoted to the syllabus. One means to help ensure that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online studying and provides in-depth practical training is to check that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Questions to Ask Trade School Programs

Questions to ask Lewisville AR trade schoolsAfter you have chosen the vocation and type of degree or certificate that you want to acquire, either on campus or online, you can start to limit your list of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are many trade schools in the  Lewisville AR area and all over the Country to select from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of important qualifiers when making school comparisons. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, tuition and location will probably be the initial two aspects you will consider. Following are several additional ones that you need to explore before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Lewisville AR area vocational programs have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They can earn Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs as a whole, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for example HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting agency, for example the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you get a superior education, it may help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited schools. Furthermore, some states require that the  training program be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One indicator to help determine the quality of a vocational school near Lewisville AR is how long it has been in business. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the best of schools had to start from their opening day of training, so use it as one of several qualifications.

Completion Rates.  Ask the tech schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may suggest that students were dissatisfied with the course and quit. It could also suggest that the instructors were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s also imperative that the schools have high job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of alumni, which may result in more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or jobs in the Lewisville AR area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of technical programs are taught along with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and vocational schools will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of businesses or labor unions. Ask if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Lewisville AR area professionals in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by furnishing practical training, but it also furnishes employment opportunities and helps to form relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be working with in the field. If you are already in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the specialist you are working under concerning what you should be looking for. Otherwise, ask a local Lewisville AR contractor if they can provide some pointers. Also bear in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your residence. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, besides the added moving costs there may be increased tuition charges compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much one-on-one training as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor some of the classes so that you can see how big they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback concerning class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak with some of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Arkansas and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are assessing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Lewisville AR, verify that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Additionally, find out what the policy is to make-up classes should you miss any due to work, sickness or family emergencies.
