Learning a Vocation Online

Venetie AK student attending online vocational programSchools available online have become more attractive with Venetie AK students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. Even though online learning is a readily available and practical way to earn a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For instance, learning to drive a semi truck is not something that you can accomplish online, nor is training how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by studying or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online learning, such as studying safety and driving guidelines for trucking schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. Some programs will blend online instruction with on campus lab work, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before choosing an online school for any trade if there is a suitable amount of practical training allocated to the curriculum. One means to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive practical training is to confirm that it’s accredited by a nationally acknowledged accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those vocations that are appropriate for online training, it can be a convenient way for those with limited time to learn a new trade.

Things to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Venetie AK trade schoolsAs soon as you have selected the trade and type of certificate or degree that you want to obtain, either online or on campus, you can start to decrease your selection of schools. As you are certainly aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Venetie AK area and throughout the United States to pick from. That’s why it is extremely important to have a checklist of key qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier stated in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will most likely be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are some additional ones that you need to research before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accredited.  Numerous Venetie AK area vocational programs have attained either a regional or a national accreditation. They may acquire Institutional Accreditation, which focuses on the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which relates to a specific program, for instance HVAC technology. Verify that the school is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Along with helping make certain that you obtain a superior education, it can help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often unavailable for non-accredited programs. Also, some states require that the  training course be accredited in order to be approved for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help determine the quality of a trade school near Venetie AK is how long it has been in operation. A poorly ranked or a fly by night school typically will not be in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. However, even the top schools had to start from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the trade schools you are reviewing what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A low completion rate could suggest that students were disappointed with the program and quit. It might also signify that the teachers were not competent to instruct the students. It’s similarly imperative that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a more extensive directory of graduates, which may produce more contacts for the school to utilize for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate can not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment in the Venetie AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  A large number of vocational programs are taught along with an apprenticeship or an internship program. Those participating vocational and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of contractors or trade unions. Find out if the schools you are considering have working partnerships with Venetie AK area specialists in the field. An apprenticeship not only offers a rewarding experience by providing hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to form relationships in the area professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Make sure that the campus facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are state-of-the-art and what you will be using in the field. If you are currently in an internship or an apprenticeship, check with the tech you are working with regarding what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Venetie AK company if they can provide some suggestions. Additionally keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the school must be within commuting distance of your home. Take note that if you decide to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be increased tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much individualized training as possible, which can be difficult in larger classes. Ask if you can sit in on a few of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and witness first hand the interaction between teachers and students. Talk to some of the students and get their feedback regarding class sizes and instruction. Finally, speak to a few of the instructors and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what certifications or degrees they hold.

Flexible Scheduling.  Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are evaluating are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you are only able to attend classes at night or on weekends near Venetie AK, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select allows part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.
