Learning a Trade Online

Tuntutuliak AK student attending online vocational programOnline schools have become more attractive with Tuntutuliak AK students and more and more accredited programs are being offered. While online learning is a readily available and practical way to obtain a degree or certificate, it may not be the best option for every vocation or trade. For example, training to drive a semi truck is not something that you can do online, nor is learning how to weld. These are skills that have to be learned through hands on training and by doing it, not by reading about it or watching videos. But certain components of the training may be appropriate for online education, for example learning safety and driving guidelines for truck driving schools or learning about metallurgy or how to read blueprints for welding schools. A number of programs will incorporate online education with on-campus practical training, for example for HVAC or plumbing schools. So it is very important to determine before enrolling in an online program for any vocation if there is an adequate amount of hands-on training devoted to the course of study. One way to help establish est that a vocational school program is both appropriate for online learning and delivers comprehensive hands-on training is to verify that it’s accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency (more on accreditation later). For those trades that are appropriate for training online, it can be a practical way for individuals with limited time to acquire a new vocation.

Concerns to Ask Trade Schools

Questions to ask Tuntutuliak AK trade schoolsWhen you have selected the vocation and type of certificate or degree that you want to attain, either online or on campus, you can start to limit your selection of schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of vocational schools in the  Tuntutuliak AK area and all over the USA to select from. That’s why it is imperative to have a list of relevant qualifications when making school evaluations. As earlier mentioned in our opening paragraph, location and tuition will probably be the first two factors you will take into consideration. Following are several additional ones that you should investigate before enrolling in your school of choice.

Accreditation.  A large number of Tuntutuliak AK area vocational schools have received either a regional or a national accreditation. They may attain Institutional Accreditation, which involves the school’s programs overall, or Programmatic Accreditation, which pertains to an individual program, for instance HVAC technology. Make sure that the program is accredited by a U.S. Department of Education approved accrediting organization, for instance the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. In addition to helping make certain that you get a quality education, it can assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable for non-accredited schools. Additionally, many states require that the  training course be accredited for it to qualify for licensing where applicable.

How Long in Operation? One clue to help measure the quality of a trade school near Tuntutuliak AK is how long it has been in business. A poorly rated or a fly by night school usually will not stay in business very long, so longevity is a big plus. On the other hand, even the best of schools had to begin from their first day of training, so use it as one of several qualifiers.

Completion Rates.  Ask the vocational schools you are looking at what their completion rates are. The completion rate is the percentage or portion of students who enroll in and finish the course. A lower completion rate may signify that students were unhappy with the course and dropped out. It could also indicate that the teachers were not qualified to instruct the students. It’s similarly essential that the schools have higher job placement rates. Older and/or more reputable schools may have a broader list of alumni, which may mean more contacts for the school to use for their apprenticeship and job placement programs. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of contacts to help graduates acquire apprenticeships or employment in the Tuntutuliak AK area.

Apprenticeship Programs.  Most vocational programs are taught together with an internship or an apprenticeship program. Those participating trade and technical programs will help place you in an apprenticeship program within their network of companies or trade unions. Ask if the schools you are reviewing have working partnerships with Tuntutuliak AK area specialists in the trade. An apprenticeship not only provides a rewarding experience by supplying hands-on training, but it also furnishes job opportunities and helps to build relationships in the local professional community.

Modern Facilities.  Confirm that the school facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date and what you will be working with on the job. If you are presently in an internship or an apprenticeship, consult with the tech you are working with concerning what you should be expecting. If not, ask a local Tuntutuliak AK company if they can provide some tips. Also keep in mind that unless you are willing to relocate, the school needs to be within commuting distance of your home. Remember that if you decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there can be higher tuition fees compared to in-state residents.

Smaller Classes.   It’s desirable that you get as much personalized instruction as possible, which can be challenging in bigger classes. Ask if you can monitor a couple of the classes so that you can observe how large they are and experience the interaction between instructors and students. Speak with a few of the students and get their feedback relating to class sizes and instruction. Last, speak to a few of the teachers and learn what their level of experience is in Alaska and what degrees or certifications they have earned.

Flexible Scheduling.  Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to handle your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Tuntutuliak AK, confirm that the programs you are looking at provide those choices. If you can only attend part-time, be sure that the school you select permits part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make-up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family issues.
